Loewy Institute Graduate Researcher Michael Pires Presents at ESAFORM 2023 on EBSD Use for Aluminum Extrusion Metal Flow Analysis

From April 19th to April 21st, 2023, the ESAFORM 2023 conference took place in Kraków, Poland at the AGH University of Science and Technology. Loewy Institute Graduate Researcher and PhD candidate in Materials Science & Engineering, Michael Pires, presented research conducted alongside collaborator Jacek Madura on the use of Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) for conducting analysis on metal flow from aluminum extrusion.

Aluminum porthole extrudates were produced using innovative die designs in an effort to improve metal flow during production. This was achieved by increasing the volume of allowable material in the die and by reducing the extrusion load. Michael’s contribution involved the use of EBSD as a quality assurance tool to characterize the microstructural texture and grain morphology as a result of varied porthole die designs.

Michael and The Loewy Institute would like to thank Jacek Madura, the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), Lider, and Albatros Aluminum for their involvement with and contributions to this project, as well as AGH and ESAFORM for collaborating on a successful ESAFORM 2023 conference.

Special thanks to Jacek Madura, AGH University of Science and Technology, NCBR, Lider, and Albatros Aluminum.
